How Far Ahead to Book Antigua Guatemala: The Calendar

Rule one is the shuttle clock. The main day-trip operator in Antigua publishes on its own shuttle page that its shuttles must be reserved 48 hours ahead. That is a printed rule, not our guess, and it means same-day decisions do not exist on the booked tours. The practical floor for any Pacaya morning, lake day or market run is therefore two days. Decide on Tuesday for a Thursday departure, not on the doorstep at 6:00.

Rule two is the festival. Semana Santa compresses a year of visitor demand into a single week, and it works on its own logic, covered in its own section below. Everything else sits between those poles. Walking tours, coffee tours and cooking classes are small-group and flexible by nature, and operators hold spaces longer than they hold shuttle seats.

The honest pattern is that weekends thin out faster than weekdays across the board. A small-group tour with spaces on a Tuesday can be full by Saturday, so if your dates land on a weekend, move the same two-day floor up to three or four. Compare cards and their cancellation rules on the tours hub.

Start with the scale. The municipal plan for the 2026 season counted about 56 velaciones and 58 processions across Lent and Holy Week, with the city's sawdust carpets laid through the week by families on the procession streets. That is not a single event you can add to a booking form. It is a season, and the city runs differently inside it.

The 2027 dates are computed from the calendar. Lent Sundays begin on 14 February 2027, Palm Sunday falls on 21 March 2027, Holy Thursday on 25 March 2027 and Good Friday on 26 March 2027, with Easter Sunday on 28 March 2027. The brotherhoods' 2027 programme is not yet published, so exact procession times and routes cannot be printed yet. Anyone quoting you a Good Friday hour for 2027 is guessing.

The municipal machinery shows the pressure better than any tourism brochure. Vehicle stickers under the MarbEx scheme cost Q10 ($1.31) Monday to Thursday and Q20 ($2.62) on Friday, weekends and during Semana Santa, with motorcycles at Q5 ($0.65) and Q10 ($1.31). Parking at the Santa Ines and La Polvora lots is capped daily at Q40 ($5.24), and free shuttle buses run from those car parks into the centre. A pedestrian perimeter activates from 04:00 on procession days. Shops may be resupplied only before 04:00 from Holy Thursday to Easter, and bars have been ordered closed on Holy Thursday and Good Friday in recent years.

Now the honest room line. No official source publishes when Antigua hotels sell out for the season, and we will not invent a deadline. A large part of the city needs no booking at all, and saying so plainly is more useful than inventing deadlines. The municipal market opens any morning and you simply walk in. The churches open their doors on their own schedules, no ticket, no slot. The ruin and convent sites that INGUAT lists, including Capuchinas and Santa Clara, generally open from 9:00 to 17:00.

The hillside viewpoint is the same story. The signposted trail to Cerro de la Cruz takes about 20 to 30 minutes from the historic centre, and the only cost is the climb. Getting around between all of these is walk-up too. The municipal tariff for a tuk-tuk ride in town is $1.31 (Q10), set by the city itself, though drivers often ask visitors more so agree the fare first. The vehicles come off the street at 22:00, which shapes late plans more than any booking system does.

One honest caveat closes the list. Several ruin-site entry fees are simply not stated online, and they are paid at the gate in cash. That is walk-up by definition, and it also means you should carry small notes rather than assume a card machine. Early booking does not buy a volcano summit. The Acatenango and Fuego ascents remain suspended by official order, with the park gates closed and hiking routes restricted, and no operator can sell you a legal ascent right now whatever the dates on your calendar. Some operator pages still list the trips without any closure notice, which is exactly why this page separates what is printed from what is true. It does not buy procession times either. The brotherhoods publish their programmes in their own time, and until they do, no deposit moves a Good Friday route closer to being announced. Patience is the only lead time that works there.

And it does not buy flexibility on the flight card. The Tikal day trip by air is sold with all sales final, so the early booker carries the cancellation risk in both directions. Book it early, but only once the dates are certain. What early booking does buy is simple and real, the first shuttle of the morning, which is the departure the operators run before the afternoon rains of the wet months.
